minä perhonen “sulka” —Light as a Feather, A Poised Blouse for the Season of Thaw
With each turn of the seasons,
there is a piece I quietly look forward to bringing out from my closet.
It is the “sulka” balloon blouse, a piece I carefully chose from the archive of minä perhonen.
As I gaze upon this textile—“sulka,” meaning “feather” in Finnish—my thoughts quietly wander to the moment it was first brought into being.
This time, I’d like to share the quiet beauty of “sulka”—a piece that remains poised even from the back, gently straightening the posture the moment it is worn—
along with the three color variations of the sulka balloon blouse.
mina perhonen “sulka” — 2019-20 a/w Collection
“Sulka” was introduced in the Autumn/Winter 2019–20 collection.
Looking closely at the textile, what stands out is the contrast between the bold, sweeping lines that move with strength, and the finer, more delicate lines that seem to follow their flow.
I find myself imagining the very moment these lines were brought to life—the rhythm of the pen, the gentle breath of the designer.
Wearing it feels like carrying a piece of art; it offers a quiet, profound sense of fulfillment, as if the designer’s hand is still moving within the delicate lines.
Three Colors, Three Expressions —
The Worlds Each “sulka” Draws
The same textile, the same silhouette—
and yet, the atmosphere it carries shifts remarkably with the choice of color.
From here, I’ll introduce the three color variations, along with the different impressions each one brings.
As you read, perhaps you might imagine which color gently resonates with who you are right now.
Available in three colors
- White (Main Color) × Navy
- Light Beige (Main Color) × Light gray
- Dark gray (Main Color)× Black
1. White × Navy — A Poised Contrast
A clean, luminous white, set with a deep and quiet navy print.
Among the three, this combination offers the most defined contrast—
and when worn, it naturally draws the posture upright, creating a quietly dignified impression.

2. Light Beige × Light gray — A Gentle Afterglow
Light beige that melts softly into the skin, layered with a delicate light gray print.
Even the lines of the feathers are rendered in gentle tones, allowing the whole piece to seem to dissolve into the light—carrying with it an air of quiet softness.

3. Dark gray × Black — Depth and Nuances of Light
A calm, deep gray layered with a rich black print.
Among the three, it is the most understated—carrying a sense of depth and the quiet beauty of shadow.

Worn on its own, it gives a calm and composed impression.
But by adding a single touch of light near the face—a pearl necklace, or a brooch in a brighter tone—the depth of the print is brought out even further.
It is a color with remarkable depth, one whose expression can shift dramatically depending on the accessories it meets.

A Carefully Considered Silhouette for Grown Elegance
What you notice the moment you slip it on is its perfectly balanced fit.
The shirring at the neckline and cuffs is more comfortably snug than expected.
Because these key points are gently drawn in, the softly voluminous puff sleeves never feel excessive—
instead, they bring the entire silhouette into a quiet, beautiful balance.

From the shoulders to the elbows, the sleeves fall into a soft, airy puff,
then gently taper from the elbows down to the cuffs.
(It’s a bit hard to describe, but if you imagine tapered pants—this feels like their counterpart, translated into a blouse.)

At first glance, its softness suggests a relaxed, loose fit—but once you put it on, it’s quite a surprise.
The body is fairly slim, and the sleeves gradually narrow from the elbows to the cuffs, giving it a more structured feel than expected.
Perhaps it’s the way it gently covers the upper arms,
or how the fit skims the body without clinging—
but somehow, it’s a blouse that makes you look a little slimmer, as if by quiet magic.

The fabric is 100% cotton, with a crisp, structured feel.
(I do find myself a little concerned about potential shrinkage with dry cleaning…
so far, though, it has held up well.)
With a low stand collar,

the back is lined with a row of shell buttons.

The gently fitted cuffs also add a refined, elegant touch.

A balloon silhouette, which can so easily become overly sweet, is carefully guided—never too casual—into a quietly poised femininity.
Within this single blouse resides the thoughtful precision so characteristic of mina perhonen.
Bringing Color to Everyday Life —
Styling a Refined Blouse

I’ve put together a few styling ideas for each color.
- White (Main Color) × Navy
Styled with a navy or black tailored skirt and boots for a modern, refined look. - Light Beige (Main Color) × Light Gray
Paired with an off-white A-line skirt for a soft, tonal look. - Dark Gray (Main Color) × Black
Paired with white slacks for a sharp, refined look.
It felt slimmer than I had expected.
The neckline and cuffs are quite firmly shaped, and because of this, even with the puffed shoulders, it never appears oversized or overly casual—
instead, it settles into a quietly feminine blouse.
The waist is also more fitted than it seems at first glance.
With slits at the hem, it looks lovely worn as is,
but it also tucks in beautifully, maintaining a clean silhouette.
And although it carries a soft, airy volume, it pairs surprisingly well with skirts—
a balance that feels very much shaped by this thoughtful design.

As for the “sulka” textile, it is also available across a range of other pieces—
including cut-and-sew tops, skirts, dresses, and knits.
For those considering a purchase, it’s worth noting that the same textile appears in different materials and slightly varied silhouettes.
Taking a moment to look closely at these differences is something I would gently recommend.

Each of the three colors has its own charm,
but the one I find myself reaching for most often is the light beige.
A shade that feels familiar, yet somehow found nowhere else—
it has become a piece I want to cherish for a long time.

This time, I introduced the sulka balloon blouse.
