Beyond “Mottainai”: Archiving minä perhonen Masking Tapes in an Adult Sticker Book

In Japan today, we are seeing a massive resurgence in the culture of collecting stickers and stationery. This trend, fueled by the enthusiasm of elementary, middle, and high school students, has grown into a multi-generational movement that now captivates their parents as well.

We have a beautiful word in Japanese: "Mottainai." It reflects a sense of regret when something is wasted. Often, we cherish our favorite items so much that we tuck them away in a drawer, waiting for that "perfect" moment. However, I’ve realized that letting these beautiful designs age and lose their luster without ever being enjoyed is the true "Mottainai."

Today, I’d like to show you how I’ve embraced this trend through the exquisite designs of minä perhonen, creating my own "Adult Sticker Book"—a personal archive to celebrate the things I love while they are still at their most beautiful.

“I want to give this to you too, Mom!”

Lately, my daughter has been completely absorbed in her sticker book. From sparkling, puffy stickers to unusual tile-like ones, she carefully places each piece with such care. Watching her, I found myself quietly remembering my own childhood.

While she belongs to the “stick and enjoy” kind,
I’ve always been firmly in the “preserve and treasure” camp when it comes to masking tapes.

Especially with minä perhonen masking tapes—their charm feels almost too precious to use. I often find myself lining them up, simply admiring them, caught in a quiet loop of “keep, keep, keep…”

But after once experiencing the quiet disappointment of letting a beloved roll sit unused until it reached the end of its life, my way of thinking has begun to shift, little by little.

While waiting for “someday,”
I came to realize that masking tapes, too, have a lifespan.

With so many varieties to choose from, masking tapes are easy to collect—sometimes without even realizing how many you’ve gathered.
At events, there are often limited designs available only at that moment, and before you know it, you might find yourself buying them for use, for safekeeping, and even—perhaps—just to admire.

But just a moment.

I found myself doing the same in the past, but masking tapes, too, have what you might call a “lifespan.” They aren’t able to stay in perfect condition—or keep their adhesive—forever.

For example, a roll of Miffy masking tape I bought five or six years ago.
I had assumed it would be fine since it was still unopened, but when I finally opened it, the edges felt slightly sticky. And when I tried to use it, it had already dried out, peeling away lightly and refusing to stay in place.

At that point, it was no longer functioning as masking tape at all.
Still, I couldn’t bring myself to give up on it, and resorted to the rather desperate solution of sealing it down with clear tape (a slightly clumsy fix, I admit).

“If only I had used it more, and sooner…”
That thought lingered.

Perhaps the time we’re able to enjoy our favorite designs in their most beautiful state is shorter than we imagine.

In fact, masking tapes are often said to have a lifespan of around two to three years from the time of production.
(Though this can vary by manufacturer, and Japanese-made tapes kept in good conditions may last up to around five years.)

Beyond that point, the adhesive gradually changes—becoming sticky and tacky, or on the contrary, drying out and losing its hold, causing the tape to peel away more easily.

To preserve the designs you love for as long as possible—
a few tips for storing them well, and the courage to use them.

The Basics of Storage

Don’t miss the “sweet spot” of your masking tapes—
how to care for the small treasures tucked away in your drawer.

“Avoid direct sunlight and store in a cool place.”
It may sound like something obvious. But after going through that experience with my beloved Miffy tape, I realized that simply putting them away wasn’t enough.

In general, masking tapes are said to have a lifespan—their “sweet spot” for use—of around two to three years from the time of production.

To keep your favorite designs in beautiful condition for as long as possible,
I’ve gathered a few points I’ve become more mindful of along the way.

  • Avoid sudden changes in temperature and humidity.
While a drawer offers a nice, dark place for storage, enclosed spaces—especially in summer—can become hot and humid, causing the adhesive to soften and deteriorate.A well-ventilated, stable environment is ideal.
  • Keep the edges (cut sides) clean
Once opened, the sides of masking tape tend to collect dust more easily.
From there, deterioration can gradually begin. So each time I use one, I place it in a small OPP bag or arrange them neatly in a case, making sure the cut edges don’t come into contact with too many surfaces.
  • Let them breathe once in a while
(I know I just mentioned storing them in bags to keep out dust, but…)
It seems that sealing them too tightly can actually accelerate the oxidation of the adhesive. So from time to time, I open the drawer, rearrange them, and simply take a moment to admire them. That quiet “time of appreciation” might, in its own way, be good for the health of the tapes, too.

But no matter how carefully we store them, time continues to pass.

“To let them deteriorate and eventually throw them away—that feels like the greatest waste.”

Once I came to that realization, I stopped keeping them tucked away so carefully.
Instead, I began to focus on the moment—using them while they are still at their most beautiful, so they can bring a little joy to myself or to someone else.

It felt like a quiet shift toward a new way of appreciating them.

Use them while they are still at their most beautiful—
favorite items that turn a drawer into a treasure box.

A few favorite masking tapes I shared as small gifts with friends.
The translucency is beautifully delicate.

・A masking tape a fellow minä friend once described as “quite rare.”
The smile motif is so charming, it brings a gentle sense of comfort.

The design feels both dynamic and charming, with a balance that makes it easy to use in everyday life—both in style and in price.

Even if you’re not the most skillful, it’s perfectly okay.
Turn the spark you feel right now into a keepsake called “memory.”

When my favorite masking tapes and stickers gather around me,
there’s a quiet warmth that gently fills my heart.

And yet, being someone who isn’t particularly skilled at crafting or decorating,
I used to hesitate—wondering if I might somehow ruin those delicate designs with my own hands.

What softened that feeling was the lively, free-spirited “sticker book” my daughter had been making.

It wasn’t about perfect placement, or avoiding wrinkles.
It was simply a place where she fixed her honest feeling of “I love this right now” onto the pages.

“I see… it’s because I feel like I have to use them beautifully that I end up not using them at all.”

Wanting to give shape to that realization,
I prepared a single notebook.

There are still many blank pages,
but little by little, my own “Adult Sticker Book” has begun to take form.

Opening a favorite notebook,
and slowly placing the designs I love—one by one.

In my own way,
it has become a kind of “archive.”

Even when the tape itself eventually reaches the end of its life,
I can return to that moment of quiet excitement simply by opening these pages.

Thinking of it that way,
it feels somehow both luxurious and deeply reassuring.

Even the ones quietly resting in your drawer—
perhaps it’s time to bring them gently back into the light.

Not simply to keep them stored,
but to let them be seen, at least once.

May your favorite designs softly add a touch of color
to the quiet rhythm of your everyday life.
